Gender Stereotyping of American First Ladies Term Paper

Gender Stereotyping of American First Ladies - Term Paper ExampleThey summarized previous studies on the way that the media inform Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton and Barbara Bush and agreed with the observation that journalists tend to use single of four different frames for viewing the first ladies, namely as an escort for her husband, as a style-setter for fashionable society, in a noblesse oblige role doing charity works or taking a political role as a policy advisor. Earlier studies had shown that the more politically involved the presidential wife was, the less positive the new reporting was. Houchin and Winfield thus analyzed media coverage of the wives of the presidential president and vice presidential candidates in the 2000 presidential election, hoping to establish what frame analyzedused and how the First and Second Ladies roles ar evolving. The data used in this study included personality profiles, new features, interviews, opinion columns, and campaign updates. It is clear that the wives were involved in the whole electioneering process. At first, the escort role was stressed, and then over time, an element of sacrifice was introduced, since some of these wives had given up high powered careers to support their electioneering husbands. By the end of the election campaign, the press had positive a new frame The Anti-Hillary. What this study shows is that Hillary Clinton, a strong, capable politician in her own right, is seen as a negative asset to a president. genius cannot help wondering what the situation would be if the roles were reversed, for example, if a woman were running for office and her husband came under press scrutiny. This is not a scenario which occurs very often, and when one looks at international examples, such as Margaret Thatcher in Great Britain, and Indira Gandhi in India, one finds that the press is not interested in their husbands as much because they are either dead or seen as irrelevant.

Industry Analysis - Application to the Oil Industry - Case Study ExampleSuppliers play an imperative role in the success of any business. A supplier has powers to determine the profitability of a company, and in the case of the oil industry, the suppliers of BP can either assist it to become more loose and productive or to lose their market and make losses. This stems from the fact that suppliers agree to supply their products to the company at a certain given market price. If they addition the price at which they sell their products to the company, this allow reduce the profit margin of BP, and the lack of alternative suppliers, as well as the strong power of the suppliers will bring the profitability of the company down. On the other hand, these suppliers can equally boost the profitability of the company by supp lying it with product at a low cost, thereby increasing the companys profit margin and hence boost its profit levels. As such, it is imperative for BP to make the right choices of suppliers in order to secure a significant profit margin. BP sells its products to a wide range of customers. These people bring profit to it by purchasing its petroleum products. Its major(ip) customers include airline companies, governments, as well as ordinary motorists and companies. It is important that management strategies be consistent and systematic (Ansoff 1979). According to doorkeeper (1985), a firms competitive advantage is achieved by quality development of differentiation and leadership in the chain of that firm. Porter classifies these chain activities into twain groups the primary feather and the back off activities. Primary activities are activities such as marketing and sales, inbound-outbound logistics, and service. Inbound logistics receive actual raw material during the beginning of the proceeds process. operations comprises of physical activities of processing raw materials. Outbound logistics involve storage of produced goods succession marketing and sales refers to the actual and physical processes of sale of goods and market ing. Services relate to activities that follow after sale to customers. Support activities include technology advancement, firm alkali and management of human resource. Primary systems are aided by firm infrastructure which consists of the companys culture and its systems of control. The human resource management engages in activities like hiring, firing and training staff. Technology advancement factors are useful support to activities during work process and procurement such as purchasing and obtaining material. Primary activities are those activities directly and physically involved in the production process while support activities comprises of those processes indirectly and not physically involved in production and sale of products created. Furthermore, Porter argued that support activity provides an anchor on specific primary activities while firm infrastructure support the entire line as a whole. Sector matrix is a long known phenomenon. Since organization of production proc esses was challenged, it has been a topic of debate. The challenges began after Porter. When observations made by scholars of management like Geffen came up with the commodity value chains. Value chains are further argued against the sector matrix Froud et al (1998). It is argued that competitive advantage is an aspect of many activities incorporated together to gain the firm a general step ahead. This argument direct to value adding effect of more than one activity being achieved in production, marketing and delivery of products. Sector matrix system is developed especially for daedal management structures. Though a popular system that is established effectively in many organizations, the matrix has its limitations. Sector matrix is a system of management with a number of managers in different departments who report to one overall manager. The strateg y is excellent in some large firms. It is however yet to be adopted by other companies that follow trend and wish to use it. Sector matrix framework has been an issue of trying and making mistakes. It has created such downfalls and arise cycles for companies trying to incorporate it for the very first time. Sector matrix in general is only efficient in the long run. Some of the challenges faced by organizations with or trying to adopt the matrix include decision process complications. Same Sex Marriage Essay Example for Free

Same Sex Marriage EssayNancy Gill has been working for the American Postal office for almost 23 years unless unlike other employees who can provide health benefits for their families, she can non provide the aforesaid(prenominal) for her spo hire because of one reason she is married to a woman. Gill and her spouse, Marcelle Letourneau were married in Massachusetts in 2004 and now, they atomic number 18 ch wholeenging the federal law Defense of Marriage Act or DOMA that defines marriage as a being mingled with a man and a woman (Seelye). The braces are backed up by Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders together with 15 other couples who to a fault complained about DOMA. The same bring up couples are fighting against DOMA because they claim that DOMA makes same sex marriage look very immoral. Also, it gives a big burden on same sex couples because ended up hurting such couples by making them pay twice for health insurance, for example, or denying them death benefits (Seely e). The Obama administration disagrees with DOMA provided as of the moment, there is nothing drastic they can do about it because it is not unconstitutional. The issue here is not whether to allow same-sex marriage five states and the territorial dominion of Columbia train allowed it but it does not change the fact that couples in same sex marriages are left out of the benefits that the typical heterosexual couple receives. As one may notice, same sex marriages are not legal in all the parts of the United States. Only some states deport approved of it and as of the moment, same sex marriages are not really prioritized by law as seen in the article. They are not given the same benefits as normal couples.Anthropology is useful in the subject of same sex marriage because the study of anthropology has documented the development of same sex marriage from all over the world. For example, it is only in some societies that same sex marriage is allowed such as Spain, Canada, the Netherlan ds and Belgium (Haviland et al, 20). Anthropology tells us that the development of same sex marriage is unlike depending on the society because it is human societies that define the boundaries of social relationships (20).According to many feminist anthropologists, the reason why same sex marriage is not promptly acceptable in the society of the United States is because the societys has allowed men to dictate on the womens sexuality and make rules for it (Lewin et al, 71). That kind of society is called patriarchal and in that society, men use sexuality as a tool to dominate and oppress women through sexual objectification (71). From the feminist perspective, sex, marriage and family were all tools used by men to hold women to heterosexuality and as a result, under the male power.Anthropologists point out how males dominate the females in many aspects of culture and society. Examples of these are arranged and child marriages, brideprice, foot-binding, solitude (the segregation of women from men typical in some Islam societies), veiling, the chastity belt, clitoridectomies, and female infanticide (71-72). Practices like these are made by society to make sure that women are always paired up with men. That is how men dominate women in society through major and minor cultural and societal practices.Given this information, it is not a surprise as to why same sex couples are having a hard time attaining rights that are equal to the typical heterosexual marriage or marriage to the opposite sex. As stated above, DOMA dictates that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, not a union of ii men or two women respectively. DOMA is a law created by the government, a patriarchal institution. The government patronizes heterosexual unions, which is a political institution in itself.straightness is a political union that makes women less powerful (71). Society goes by heterosexuality and dictates that women should always end up with men. The fact that there are much women nowadays who are open to same sex marriages is a threat to the political institutions because women, after all, can have the freedom to choose whether or not they would like to marry and who they will marry. This fact is unacceptable to society because it does not agree with the rules of societal relations that have been established. If one goes back to history, marriage in most cultures have always been known to be a union between a man and a woman. The union of two sexes is still super unthinkable for many societies because in that union, most likely there is no more inequality between the two entities because they are of the same sex. Same sex marriage may be accepted in some states but it does not mean that it is warmly accepted. Life for same sex couples is still problematic because society sees it as a breaking away from the norms.Same sex unions are making progress in gaining acceptance but they still have a long way to go. After all, we are still governed by a patriar chal society. sWorks Cited Haviland, William et al. The Essence of Anthropology. California Thomas Wadsworth, 2007. Lewin, Ellin Leap, William, eds. Slumdog Millionaire Essay Example for Free

Slumdog Millionaire EssayThe issue we moderate decided to discuss is centred around the two children Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail who star in a leading role in the spud Slumdog Millionaire. The film grossed $141,000,000 in the US alone and had a budget of $15 million but the two children only received 500 ($700 American Dollars) and 1,700 ($2408.50 American Dollars). Despite the claims of director Danny Boyle, that the film has completely changed their impoverished lives (Tyler, 2009) the children continue to live in the slums in India from where they were originally found. The childrens parents were very disappointed given the films ecumenic success and had hoped that this film and their childrens leading roles would have given them opportunity of a better life outside the slums. Having found themselves leading the same lives as before Slumdog Millionaire, they realised just how under-paid their children were actually paid. Ismail predicament is considerably worse off as his illegal home was recently demolished by local authorities. It is even more difficult for the children to return to the slums given the lifestyle and the luxuries they received during the filming, promotion and subsequent award ceremonies. However both film makers and film distributors have disputed the families claims and have highlighted that the wages paid to both the children were three times the average local annual adult salary. Furthermore provisions have been do for the childrens education and once completed a trust fund will be paid to the then 18 year olds, Ali and Ismail. Ethical issues environ the topic* Underpaying the child actors in the Slumdog Millionaire movie * Allowing the children to return to the slums * Returning the children to their poverty stricken roots having experiences the lifestyle of a movie star * Not providing the children with a place to live after their home had been destroyed * Is the trust fund achievable given the childrens circumstances an d harsh living conditions?

Organic Solar Cells History, Principles and Efficiency

Organic Solar Cells History, Principles and EfficiencySolar CellsSolar cells are cells or devices use for conver bathroomg sunlight into electric bastardrent (electricity) or voltage. They are to a fault called photovoltaic cells (PV) or devices and the process of generating electricity from sunlight is called photoelectric install. Solar Energy revolution through photovoltaic effect can be achieved with many materials at different lifetimes. Over the years many question and development overhear been conducted in the area of solar expertness (thin film applications)1-3. But most of these developments have been in in original solar cells with conventional silicon base solar cells dominating in the exertion of solar susceptibility in the commercial market 4-5. Silicon base cells for thin film application have enormous advantages like good absorption rate of sunlight, sufficient band gap for photovoltaic applications, longer lifetimes and improving efficiency. But the process of silicon base cells generation of voltage is tedious and above all very(prenominal) pricy for the commercial market. Research for alternatives to silicon has been ongoing for some time now with some other inorganic materials like Copper Indium Gallium Selenium (Cu-In-Ga-Se)6, certificate of deposit Sulfide (CdS)7, Lead Cadmium Sulfide (PbCdS)8, etc. But some have similar production problems like the silicon and as well expensive. Others also are of dangerous elements which are non environmentally friendly (CdS, PbCdS, etc). Another alternative to silicon base cells in terms of thin film (solar cells) research for photovoltaic application could be organic solar cells (also known as plastic solar cells)9. With this, photocurrents are generated from organic materials. In this review, brief history of organic solar cells is discussed, the basic principle of operation is outlined and some per rollance in terms of the materials absorption rate, efficiency, stability and degradation and comparison between organic solar cells and inorganic solar cells (silicon) are also discussed.Chapter 2Organic Solar cells (Plastic Solar cells)The infancy of organic solar cells began in the late 1950s 10. At this time, photoconductivity in some organic semiconductor cells (anthracene, chlorophyll) were measured with voltage of 1 V by some research groups1112.They proposed that if a single degree PV cell is illuminated consisting of an organic shape, sandwich cell with rugged work function metal (aluminum, Al) and a conducting glass of high work function (indium tin oxide, ITO), photoconductivity will be discover. With this interesting result and less cost effective of these organic semiconductor cells and also a possibility of doping these materials to achieve more encouraging results caught up with many researchers in this field. The work done since has been unprecedented as shown in figure 2.1 on the next page.In the 1960s, semiconductive properties were observed in d yes particularly in methylene blue 13. Efficiency of 105 % in sunlight conversion was reported in the early 1970s to an advance of 1 % in the early 1980s 14. This was achieved through an interesting phenomenon known as heterojunction15. This phenomenon is a surface between semiconducting materials of dissimilar layers. Photovoltaic devices were applied with heterojunction where donor-acceptor organic cells were tailored together. In recent years, photoconductivity has been measured in dyes and the dye solar cells have progressively been improved for laboratory cells16. Currently power conversion efficiency of organic photovoltaics in single-junction devices is over 9 %17 and that of multi-junction cell is over 12 %18.Some materials of organic solar cells are dyes and some polymers like origomers19, dendrimers20, luculent crystal materials21 and self-assembled monolayers 22. All these need to be prepared carefully to obtain optimum efficiency and stability23 physique 2.1 Number of publications is plotted against the year of publications. This shows the inception of organic solar cells and how much interest the field has generated among scientists and the commercial entities over the years. Years below 1990 saw less publication (1960 to 1970 -10 and 1980 to 1990 29) compared to the years in the figure.Principle of Operations. In recent time, organic solar cells are of different operations due to their usage. Similar to inorganic solar cells, organic solar cells can be apply to convert sunlight into electricity with the aid of a semiconductor. The basic principle behind this operation is outline belowMost organic solar cells have very thin material layer either single or multi-layer where there is a strong absorption of light sandwich between deuce electrodes, an anode (A) and a cathode (C). The anode (usually indium tin oxide ITO) is transparent and has a high work function. The cathode (aluminum) is opaque and has a low work function. The material layer is us ually a photosensitive organic semiconductor. When light of appropriate free cleverness (sunlight) is incident on it, an negatron is excited from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to a lower uncopied verbalise called lowest uncopied molecular orbital (LUMO) leaving a hole in the HOMO. This leads to exciton formation. That is, there is a creation of an negatron-hole pair which is strongly bounded together. As the negatron stays at the LUMO, there is a loss in cogency by the electron through thermal relaxation as the electron penetrates the energy band gap. The electron-hole pair diffuses independent of the electric field and are separated (exciton dissociation) at the interface between the donor state (HOMO) and the accepter state (LUMO). The electron is collected at one end of the electrode (cathode) and the hole at the other end of the electrode (anode) thereby generation photocurrent in the process. If the electron and the hole after insulation do not reach the interface, their absorbed energies are dissipated out and no photocurrent is generated. Step by step principle is illustrated in pictorial form belowFigure 3.2 a) Light is incident on an electron (red). (b) Electron is excited from the HOMO to the LUMO creating a hole ( ominous) at the HOMO. (c) Exciton formation of electronhole pair. (d) Diffusion of exciton fissiparous of electric field. (e) Exciton dissociation. (f) Collection of charges.Chapter 4Performance4.1 Absorption of light. In organic solar cells, the thin organic semiconducting layer is responsible for light absorption. This layer has a valence band which is densed with electrons and a conduction band. These bands are separated by an energy gap. When the layer absorbs light, an excited state is created. This state is characterized by an energy gap. The energy gap is the energy difference between the higher energy state (LUMO) and the lower energy state (HOMO). It is usually of the range of (1.0 -4.0) eV24 and it is dete rmined asEg = ELUMO EHOMO . (4.1)Where Eg is the energy gap in electron volts (eV), ELUMO is the energy at LUMO (higher energy state) and EHOMO is the energy at HOMO (lower energy state). The energy gap usually serves as an activation energy barrier. This activation energy barrier needs to be overcome before an electron is excited from the lower energy state to the higher energy state. The excited electron has energy greater than or equal to this activation energy barrier. This energy is determined ash.cEphoton = Eg . (4.2)photonWhere Ephoton is the energy of the incident photon (light), h is Plancks perpetual (6.626 1034 Js), c is speed of light (2.997 108 ms1) and photon is wavelength of the photon ( (400 -700) nm).As the excited electron remains at the LUMO, a hole is created in the HOMO. The electron undergoes thermal relaxation as it remains at the LUMO and this result in loss of energy by the electron. This energy loss is compensated for asEl = Eelectron Eg . (4.3)Where El is thermal energy loss of the electron, Eelectron is the energy of the electron at the LUMO and Eg is the energy gap.Figure 4.1 (a) Thin organic semiconductor layer (with both LUMO and HOMO) with energy gap (Eg). (b) Incident light of greater energy than the energy gap excites electron (red) from HOMO to LUMO. This creates a hole (black) at the HOMO (c) Energy disconnected by the electron through thermal relaxation.4.2 Stability and DegradationIn solar cell application, long operational lifetime performance is required. To achieve this, stability and degradation are few of the key important issues to look at in real-time application. Over the years, stability of organic solar cells has improved very much in terms of their power conversions25. This is clearly shown in the figure belowIdeally the advantages of organic solar cells with their low cost materials, recyclable, easy production and production in large quantities, exibility and durability (low weight), stability should be op timum. These advantages somehow also affect the stability of the organic cells. The active layer (thin organic semiconducting layer) component which is a core component of the cells is sometimes prone to degradations. These degradations occur during their production (printing in bulk quantities and rolling them together thereby introducing some mechanic properties which then affect the morphology of the active layer) and also reactions from weathering (UV light, oxygen, water). Extensive work on photo stability of some organic solar cells (large number of polymers) has been investigated by Manceau et al27.Figure 4.2 Organic Photovoltaic (OPV) production with progression in years shown. The years below 2010 had lower production of OPVs ( 0.5 MW) 26. Chapter 5Comparism between organic solar cells and inorganic solar cells (Silicon base solar cells).Organic and inorganic solar cells serve similar applications but they interesting differences in terms of how they are made. Organic sola r cells are cheap in terms of materials, production and are recyclable, they have very thin solar cells with little energy in making them, they are exible, durable and have low weight, they are colourful and they have easy production and can be produced in large areas. But they have low efficiency and lifetime compared to silicon base solar cells. Inorganic solar cells are cost effective in terms of materials, production and are not recyclable, much energy is need to have thin layer cells, they are rigid and not durable, they are of dark grey materials with dark blue to black coating, they have complicated production and are difficult to produce in large areas. But they have good light absorption rate, purify efficiency and longer lifetime.Chapter 6ConclusionOrganic solar cells can be alternative to silicon base solar cells with its interesting applications. They can be fabricated into our day to day usage materials and equipment with low cost technology in serving their purpose. E fficiency and stability still remains areas that should be turn to in the future to optimally have good power conversions.
